Examine the saddle thoroughly; checking for any obvious defects like how solid the tree is, if there are tears in the leather, damaged stitching, etc. If the saddle is leather, make sure there are no cracks in the leather, and make sure the leather is supple, not dry and brittle.

Examine the saddle for cleanliness, particularly the underneath areas. Many times saddles are cleaned on the "outside," yet are missed under the skirt or saddle flaps. Although the underneath fleece may have some wear, too much dirt can be unhygienic for your horse.

A high quality used saddle can give you years, even a lifetime of enjoyable use. Most expensive, top brands are extremely well made. If maintained properly, they will last much longer and be more comfortable for you and your horse than a cheap new saddle.
